2014 Queensland Strongman Series Finals

2014 Queensland Strongman Series Finals

At Coco’s Gym we were lucky enough to be the host destination/gym for the finals of the Queensland Strongman Series for 2014. Luke and the team ran a fantastic competition with 5 divisions each running 5 events. 3 Winners were announced for each division at the end of the day.

One of the fantastic parts about the competition was that we have several members of the Camden Strongmen club in NSW come up to compete too! A big thanks to Paddy for helping to bring along his crew and come along for the day. It was a good night out with them before the competition too.

From our regular Coco’s Gym training group we had the below members enter the competition:

Jason Holmes with the 109kg Atlas Stone

Jason Holmes – Came third in novice division with some strong showings throughout the day especially in the atlas stones. Jason only joined us a couple of months ago at about 115kgs body weight and is also the oldest in our training group at 45 years old. Jasons progress has been astronomical in that time, also working to loose 12 kilograms in that short period to make it into the Gold Coast Strongman Challenge under 105kg competition.

Alex Thompson – Did very well in the move/carry events, amazing efforts in the yoke, keg loading and farmers walks. Alex had also only recently started training with us in the past two months.

Alex Evans – Standout performance from this big guy, coming in 3rd in a strong field in division 2. Alex managed to take out 1st place in his farmers event plus consistently strong finishes all through the day. This guy has come so far since he joined us in January for training, struggling to lift a 75kg log. Alex also recently came 5th overall in the over 105kg group in the recent Gold Coast Strongman Challenge. Alex has worked incredibly hard on his weaknesses and continued to grow through all events. I expect Alex will continue to push hard and can’t wait to see where he stands in the coming year, Alex will move up to Division 1 for 2015’s Queensland Strongman series.

Luke Stay with 220kg Yoke

Luke Stay – Luke has also recently joined us but has formidable static strength. Luke came into the competition nursing a couple of injuries including managing to put a nail through his foot a couple of weeks back. His strong showing in the viking press leaves no doubt his strength will help him in future competitions.

Andrew with 220kg Yoke Walk

Andrew Absolom –  This was Andrews first attempt at a strongman competition. He did well in the viking press and farmers walk. I remember his first training session where he stood up at walked with 100kgs per hand in farmers. I haven’t seen that too often. Andrew didn’t do the stones event after an old injury in his back but I know he will be back next year for more.

Christian on his way to 3rd place in the yoke walk with 250kgs on his back

Christian Kamphuis – Chris has now got a couple of competitions under his belt and has been working on fixing his weaknesses. Christians size and leg power certainly stands out in his efforts in the yoke walk. Chris shined in that event in Queensland Strongman series finals where he came third in his event with 250kgs on his back over a 15 metre course.

Jean-Stephen Coraboeuf/Coco – Owner of the gym and also only picked up his first strongman implement in December 2013. I had been trying to get him to have a go at lifting cool things (strongman implements) for about 9 months and he wouldn’t have a bar of it. Coco seemed to think that bodybuilding and mirrors were the most important aspects of going to the gym. Since then Coco has done very well in the sport competing at around 110kgs bodyweight. Coco came 2nd on the day in division 1 but with his consistency in rounds 1,2 and 3 where he placed 2nd, 1st and 1st he also took home the series win for division 2 of the Queensland Strongman Series 2014.

Chad – I was pretty happy with how I went overall though I failed miserably in the overheads, I couldn’t even put the 85kg log over my head, I know what I will be working on next year. I came 7th out of 10 in the division 3, my best finish yet in competition.

Big congratulations also have to go out to Alana Curnow for winning the womens 2014 Queensland Strongman Series, Mathew Waldron for winning the mens Division 3 for the year and to Scott Hipwell for coming out as Queenslands Strongest Man for 2014 after winning the 2014 Queensland Strongman series division 1!

Thanks to Luke Middleton and the Queensland Strongman crew for a great year and we are already planning for the 2015. The finals will once again be held at Coco’s Gym on December 6th 2015, see you Saturday morning for Strongman Training!

Some notable mentions go out to some regulars from our training groups too:

– Simon Morelli – Coming in second in the novice division, will definitely be moving up to division 3 next year

– Jonny Bish – Managed to explode his finger on the keg loading event, missed the stone loading event while in hospital and still managed to win Division 2 on the day!
